This article is for newcomers to the Internet who are confused by the overwhelming array of hosting packages that are available out there.
I am often asked by my clients,' why is it you can buy hosting for your website for only £1.99 a month, but I am told for my shopping website I have to pay £3.99 per month??' in fact some of my clients have suggested I use their FREE hosting which they obtained from a free CD on the front of a magazine and refuse paying for the hosting I suggest would be most ideal for them.
So what is the difference ?
The question you need to ask yourself is, 'What's the catch with FREE hosting?'
Well there isn't really a catch its just hosting companies and website design companies suck you in by playing on your naivety and hoping you don't read the small print. So what is the real difference ?
If you are planning to set-up your own website for personal use only, then fine, that's ok, providing your site doesn't get to popular, if you are planning to set-up an eccomerce site or a brochure style site for your business, then forget free hosting.
A large number of newbies have fallen down this pot hole and been lost forever, never to trust a hosting company again because they didn't read the small print and didn't understand what they were getting into.
Eg. A client is sucked into a free deal by buying a domain name and getting free hosting for ever???? , the small print reads, 'Providing you never change hosts, or want to transfer your domain name, because if you do you will pay for it, at least £99 to get your domain transferred over to a new host.' So when you realise that your free hosting capacity is so small and offers very little you will start to feel you have been conned, but you haven't, you just didn't read the small print.
With free hosting you will soon become aware that as your website grows your space or bandwidth diminishes and you get emails saying you need to upgrade your bandwidth or the package, which means you start to pay for your hosting. At first it's a small monthly fee of just £1.99 then again your website demands more, so you are asked by your hosting company that if you wish to continue with your hosting you have to upgrade again to cope with demand of bandwidth on your site, then you need databases and other facilities and before you know it your paying £15 a month for what I can do for £3.99 per month. Now you see the difference between paid and free.
The other thing is if you bought a great domain name for your business with free hosting and then you wanted to run a shopping site, NO CHANCE with free hosting, you need databases and lots of bandwidth and web space, so immediately you will have to pay in the region of £15 P/M. So you decide to contact me and ask me to transfer your new domain to my hosting, because I am a lot cheaper, too late, no can do, you either lose the domain or if they will allow it, transfer for £99 or something in that region even though you only paid £3 for your domain in the first place, it feels so unfair. So what I suggest is talk to a professional website designer with a good portfolio and ask if you can contact one of their clients to see how they feel about the service they received. Like anything else in business, do your research first.
What to look for in a good hosting package?
Plenty of web space at least 3000mb, at least 25000 mb per month bandwidth, FTP accounts and access, at least 50 mail boxes, at least 3 MySql databases and most importantly your own hosting control panel.
